(March 2008) This is a list of episodes for the television show Soul Train which aired during the first and ninth seasons (between 1971 and 1979). The dates shown are original air dates, but some dates are approximate because in the 1970s, most syndication markets did not get the episodes at the same time, so the dates shown are the first airings of the episodes. It's home base beginning this season was moved from Chicago to Los Angeles. The very first theme song used for this show was "Hot Potatoes" by King Curtis, which would be used until the eighth episode in 1973. The opening animation would involve an all yellow background with the train riding around on the traintracks blowing out smoke letters spelling out Soul Train. The first stage set theme was a train station with railroad crossing signs, and the giant Soul Train logo against the back studio wall. Sid McCoy's opening intro was, "Soul Train: the hippest trip in America. 60 non-stop minutes across the tracks of your mind into the exciting world of soul. With guest stars:" Season episode # Series episode # Guests Original airdate 1. 1. Gladys Knight & the Pips / Eddie Kendricks / The Honey Cone / Bobby Hutton October 2, 1971 2. 2.
