[edit] Cuddles Happy Tree Friends character Cuddles Gender Male Animal Rabbit Voice actor Kenn Navarro (2000–) First appearance Internet Shorts "Spin Fun Knowin' Ya" TV series "The Wrong Side of the Tracks" (Voiced by Kenn Navarro (2000–) ) Cuddles is a yellow male rabbit with pinkish cheeks who inexplicably wears pink rabbit slippers. Cuddles is one of the four primary characters in the series. Like Giggles, Toothy and Lumpy, he appears in many of the advertisements. Cuddles was the first character to be created in Happy Tree Friends. Creator Rhode Montijo first drew him on a piece of paper with the phrase Resistance Is Futile above and that was how the creators got the idea for the show. His voice is even performed by the co-creator of the show Kenn Navarro. Both his white fluffy curly hair tuft and cotton tail look exactly the same. His long ears move to match how he feels; for example, if he is happy, they stay up, and when his feelings are hurt, they drop. Cuddles' personality is somewhat mixed. On one hand, he is dangerously mischievous and self-centered, which often leads to both his death and other characters' deaths. On the other hand, he is friendly and caring, making his personality more complex than the others. He was seen to have multiple houses, but his official one is known to be a Hollow Tree, as it is the only one to appear more than once ( "In a Jam" and "Hear Today, Gone Tomorrow" ). He is particularly good friends with Toothy, Petunia, Flippy, Sniffles, Flaky Lumpy and Giggles are also very close friends, and it has been hinted several times they have crushes on each other. Their love relationship is most prominent in the Fall Out Boy music video: "The Carpal Tunnel of Love"[1]. With 45 deaths, Cuddles is the character who gets killed most times in the Happy Tree Friends franchise. He is also the character who has, so far, been killed by Flippy the most (though Flippy generally kills everyone in episodes in which he is featured). While he still dies a lot in the web and TV series, Cuddles has survived several times. He tends to die some of the messiest deaths such as being sliced to bits by helicopter blades and ceiling fans. He appeared in the The God & Devil Show (Robert Downey Jr.) as an icon on God's keys.
[edit] Giggles Happy Tree Friends character Giggles Gender Female Animal Chipmunk Voice actor Dana Belben (2000–2005) Ellen Connell (2005–) First appearance Internet Shorts "Spin Fun Knowin' Ya" TV series "The Wrong Side of the Tracks" (Voiced by Dana Belben (2000–2005) Ellen Connell (2005–)) Giggles is a pink female chipmunk who has a white diamond-shaped marking, a white oval pouch, and wears a big red bow on her head. Giggles is one of the primary characters of the series and appears along with Cuddles, Toothy, and Lumpy in the advertisements. She may have also been one of the first characters to be created along with Cuddles. She has the personality of a young girl, as she enjoys frolicking through flowers, having tea parties with friends, ice skating, and having a shy and sweet demeanor. Her name comes from her habit of giggling often. She appears to be allergic to flowers which was revealed in her Valentines smoochie. She has a white oval on her forepouch. Giggles is a very affectionate character and is often seen hugging and kissing several of the characters. She is particularly close to Cuddles whom she has a crush on as hinted in several episodes, especially in "Remains to be Seen" when zombified Giggles and Cuddles did the famous Lady and the Tramp kiss and in the Fall Out Boy: "The Carpal Tunnel of Love"[2] music video where for the first time their romantic relationship was really explored. They also kissed technically, but they were killed by impalement from a pole, their bodies slid to where it looked like they were kissing. She is best friends with Petunia. The two run a lemonade stand together. She is also friends with Toothy because he is friends with Cuddles. Though Giggles' deaths aren't usually as gruesome as Petunia's, she appears and dies more often. Her deaths usually involve her head les and Cuddles did the famous Lady and the Tramp kiss and in the Fall Out Boy: "The Carpal Tunnel of Love"[2] music video where for the first time their romantic relationship was really explored. Her deaths usually involve her head (it is mostly sliced off, or stuff is ripped out of it). One of her more gruesome injuries (and possibly the most gruesome) was in Eyes Cold Lemonade. It involves the front of her head being sliced off by nails and having lemonade spill into her face. Giggles is also very environmental in "Every Litter Bit Hurts" going so far as to chain herself to a tree to prevent Lumpy from cutting it down. When she sees someone polluting the environment, she'll lose her temper and yell at them.
[edit] Toothy Happy Tree Friends character Toothy Gender Male Animal Beaver Voice actor Warren Graff (2000–) First appearance Internet Shorts "Spin Fun Knowin' Ya" TV series "From Hero to Eternity" (Voiced by Warren Graff (2000–) ) Toothy is a purple male Beaver with very large gapped teeth (hence his name) and freckles. Toothy is one of the four primary characters in the series. Like Cuddles, Giggles and Lumpy, he appears in many of the advertisements. Although his character description on the official site says he has "big ol' buckteeth" (larger than the other characters), he occasionally has the normal buckteeth. This was mostly due to the laziness of the animators, but when Fatkat took over for the TV series, this problem was solved. He is generally a very friendly character who likes to play around now and then, particularly with the younger characters. He admires Splendid and even dresses up as him for Halloween. He can also be seen hanging out with Petunia (as shown in the TV series theme song in which they were both on a see saw and in "From Hero to Eternity" when Toothy and Petunia are building a snowman). Toothy was also Flippy's first victim in both the online shorts and TV series. There are a couple of ways in which he is famous: he is the first character to be killed ever in Happy Tree Friends and he is also the character who suffered a very long and painful death in the episode that won an award at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in France, the infamous Eye Candy.[1] Toothy has a wide range of deaths, although they most often involve his eyes. He can be used in wider range of situations, unlike most of the other characters whose various personalities define how they might act in a given situation. He mostly acts before he thinks (for example running away and throwing a lit candle behind him in "Class Act") though he is by no means addle-brained. Toothy is also the only character who didn't develop much of a personality in the TV series. During the TV series most characters' personalities matured and they grew new personality traits, such as Petunia's OCD, Cro-Marmot's interest in surfing and snowboarding, Cuddles wanting to be a rock star, etc. Although it has been hinted that he likes to watch monster movies in "Wingin' It", not much else about his personality changed. Toothy is also the only character who hasn't received a real starring role in the TV series thus far. Although his starring pop-up was shown, he didn't really star in an episode since "Autopsy Turvy" later changes to "Double Whammy Part 2". Autopsy Turvy was a fake-out episode and it was only 48 seconds long.
[edit] Lumpy Happy Tree Friends character Lumpy Gender Male Animal Moose Voice actor Rhode Montijo (2000–2004) David Winn (2004–) First appearance Internet Shorts "Spin Fun Knowin' Ya" TV series "The Wrong Side of the Tracks" (Voiced by Rhode Montijo (2000–2004) David Winn (2004–) ) Lumpy is a blue male moose with clean teeth pronging out of his mouth, bright disorbited eyes and mismatched antlers. Lumpy is one of the four primary characters in the series. Like Cuddles, Giggles, and Toothy, he appears in many of the advertisements. Known to be the big brother, or perhaps babysitter, of many of the other characters, he usually means well but he is extremely stupid. Furthermore, he screams like a girl. He is not so reliable at times and tends to mess things up a lot. Although Lumpy has generally always killed someone by accident, he is portrayed as a villain for the first time in "Dunce Upon a Time." He is the only one of the characters with a standard nose with two nostrils (all smaller Happy Tree Friends have heart-shaped Care Bears-styled noses, excluding Sniffles). Plus, he is the only one whose hands don't turn mitten-esque like the others and he, Flaky and Russell have non visible ears. Lumpy has appeared in the most episodes out of all the other Tree Friends, and most fans consider him the odd one out due to his height and lack of a normal Happy Tree Friend-styled face. There were some arguments about him being too close to Bullwinkle and "Montgomery Moose", the leader of The Get-Along Gang, so his right antler was drawn upside down. He is a hillbilly judging by his voice, his lifestyle, and the clothes he wears. Lumpy has had many occupations in many episodes, including a teacher, ticket clerk, bus driver, convenience store owner, police officer, doctor, fire fighter, magician and more. These types of jobs usually require someone with a certain level of intelligence, which may mean that Lumpy uses his brain when he is doing something important (but only to a certain degree). He is usually a fill-in character like Wooldoor Sockbat from Drawn Together. He is often shown in tremendously incongruous situations, such as lounging lazily, shirtless, and in a hammock, while the rest of the Happy Tree Friends gang are playing in the snow, as seen in Snow What? That's What!. His low intelligence is often the cause of other characters' deaths, and sometimes his own. In fact, Lumpy has caused the death of every character at least once, except Cro-Marmot and Splendid. Lumpy has the highest kill count out of all of the Happy Tree Friends. His deaths almost always involve getting crushed or torn apart in some way. He lives in a trashy trailer and drives a Lincoln Continental. His MySpace account[2] mentions that his favorite foods are cheese and sandwiches, his favorite dessert is cheesecake, and that he likes to talk to lettuce as seen in the Collect Them All Section. A rock on Mars was named after Lumpy[3].
[edit] Petunia Happy Tree Friends character Petunia Gender Female Animal Skunk Voice actor Dana Belben (2000-2006) Ellen Connel (2006-) First appearance Internet Shorts "Spin Fun Knowin' Ya" TV series "The Wrong Side of the Tracks" (Voiced by Dana Belben (2000–2006) Ellen Connell (2006–)) Petunia is a blue female skunk with a light blue arrow marking on her forehead, which is connected to the triangle shaped marking on her back. She wears a pink flower on top of her head and a pine scent deodorizer around her neck and a white pouch (even though it says on the website that she bathes many times a day), Petunia is rarely seen without her flower or deodorizer. She was seen without her flower for a brief time at the beginning of the episode "Wishy Washy" and she was also seen without it at the end of "As You Wish", and "Kringle Bells". She has only been seen without her deodorizer once. Many fans consider her slightly older than Giggles on the Internet episodes. While Giggles is childlike, Petunia acts more mature, though she still likes to play with her dolls and often has tea parties. She also seems to enjoy cooking as seen in Flippin' Burgers, "Who's To Flame", "A Change Of Heart", and "Aw, Shucks!". Petunia also seems to have a drinking habit in the series. She drinks a lot of juice which causes her bladder to go unstable at certain times. Petunia's deaths are mostly caused by household items, like sinks. Petunia is often seen in the series with Giggles. They appear to be best friends and they run a lemonade stand together. In the Internet series, they were almost identical in personality. However, whilst Giggles has appeared and not died more in the series than Petunia, Petunia's deaths are the most gruesome in the series. Many fans refer to her as one of the most unfortunate characters because of this. Like Giggles, her head is usually involved in her deaths. Petunia is also the only main character of the series who has not directly caused the death of any other character so far. She did, however, indirectly cause the death of Lumpy in the episode "Wishy-Washy". The creators have given her obsessive compulsive disorder. More specifically, she is a "neat freak". She takes showers five times a day, as it reveals in the "Collect Them All" section, and if things are either dirty, or out of their proper place, she starts to hyperventilate. She will do anything to clean it up again.
[edit] Handy (Voiced by Warren Graff (2000–) ) Handy is an orange male beaver, with unexplained amputated arms. The stumps are covered with bandages. Handy is a construction worker and wears a tool belt and a hard hat (the typical dress of most construction workers). His dam mostly consists of tools that are operated by hand. He is also the second character without visible ears. Despite his lack of hands, he is still capable of building many things big or small, though he is never actually seen building it in the first place - it is usually off-screen (with the exception of Wheelin' and Dealin', where he is seen putting the final touches to his race car). Usually, whenever he builds something for the female characters they are very pleased and often thank him by hugging him for it, like Petunia from House Warming and Giggles from Home is Where the Hurt is. However, whenever he tries to do something onscreen which would usually require hands, he fails and pulls his trademark frustrated look, indicating that he forgot that he didn't have hands. Usually when he finds a compromise, it leads to his own death and sometimes the death of others. His deaths usually involve either glass, his organs, getting impaled, or his head. His missing arms had even created his most famous death in "Shard At Work" which received more than seventeen million views and is the most viewed Happy Tree Friends episode on YouTube. In the TV series, Handy has gained an interest in flying. From the episode, In a Jam, it became apparent that he has photosensitive epilepsy, the flashing lights triggering a seizure as his eyes go ascrew, he jitters, and he foams at the mouth. At one point in the episode Wrong Side of the Tracks, Cuddles lost both of his hands, and Handy looked at the stumps on his arms and gave a mocking laugh. This could imply that Handy is jealous of people who have hands, but it could simply be Handy laughing at his "survivor's luck" and Cuddles' misfortune.
[edit] Nutty (Voiced by Michael "Lippy" Lipman (2000–) ) Nutty is a yellow-green male squirrel with a yellow diamond shaped marking on his head and an addiction for candy or anything that contains sugar. He has a big swirly lollipop, a candy cane, a small all-day sucker, and a candy apple stuck to his fur, which he even treats as his wardrobe, as evidenced in the episode Chew Said A Mouthful, although this often changes. In his debut in the episode, Nuttin' Wrong with Candy, the candy attached to his fur falls off, thus showing Nutty without candy stuck to him for the first time. One of his eyes resembles Googly eyes and the other bears a slight resemblance to Flippy's 'flipped-out' eyes. It is apparent that his googly eye is an amblyopia, or lazy eye, as it is almost always looking down and drops down whenever he looks somewhere else. His lazy eye actually changes between his googly eye and his "flipped out" eye, depending on the episode. Nutty is rarely seen not smiling. As a result of his huge sugar intake he is often hyperactive and jittery, and giggles more than he talks; He even giggles occasionally when he is dying. The only sentence that he has ever been heard saying was when he wished for a scrumptious lollipop in As You Wish. In many episodes, consuming sugar makes Nutty bounce up and down, producing a sound similar to that of a jackhammer. Nutty foams at the mouth when deprived of candy or any other sugar-related item and he will do whatever it takes to get the sugar he wants, even if it involves ignoring his hurt friends or stealing the candy from them , or even ignore his own fatal injuries. If he doesn't get what he wants, he becomes very irate. Nutty will eat other types of food occasionally (like in Class Act, when he eats part of Sniffles' body, thinking it was a candy cane), but it is a very rare case, and it is almost always because he thinks that whatever he is eating is some sort of candy. Whenever he goes to sleep without any sugar, he'll feel very sleepy and tired as he was seen yawning and sleeping in late. He seems to lack common sense, which is evidenced in many episodes. e.g. During one epsiode he chews on a jawbreaker breaking his jaw then to satisfy his want for candy he cuts open his jaw wire ahead of time Nutty appears to be slightly insane, as he thinks anything brightly colored is candy. His room is very messy and he has a bed with legs resembling candy canes, but instead of the bed, he sleeps in a bunch of candy wrappers on the floor. He has been seen drinking coffee made out of jelly beans, which is clearly not sweet enough for him since he adds a lot of sugar. Most of his deaths are caused by his obsession of candy, but he usually dies of being split apart or shredded but nutty gets impaled very frequently as seen in nuttin' wrong with candy.
[edit] Sniffles (Voiced By Liz Stuart (2000–) ) Sniffles is a blue-gray male anteater who is one of the most intelligent characters in the series. He is the second character without a heart nose and a pair of buckteeth. He usually likes reading and doing science and math problems. To reinforce the 'nerd' image that Sniffles exudes, he carries pens in a pocket protector on his chest and is seen dressed up as a Star Trek character (probably Spock, the Vulcan ears being the giveaway) in "Remains to be Seen". Sniffles' IQ has proved to be extremely high in both the Internet and TV series. He has built things which are far more advanced than what most of the other characters could create, including a rocket from a bus and even a time machine. However, sometimes these devices malfunction and work against him, leading to his own death. Like Toothy, he has a wide range of deaths, usually involving his tongue, head, limbs, or organs. He also has a multitude of jobs, including a doctor and a pilot. While Lumpy usually fills these roles, when Lumpy plays another role in the episode, it is usually Sniffles who fills them in. Sniffles' deaths are more of the torturous and painful types. His deaths are usually slower than those of the other characters (although on some occasions he has had quick deaths). Sniffles rarely survives in both the Internet and TV series. He has appeared in a few episodes and lived, but he was only on-screen briefly. Sniffles also has a craving for ants, which is one of his animal instincts. Whenever he tries to eat one, however, they kill him, after torturing him in the most sadistic of manners, such as his deaths in "Tongue in Cheek" even leading to him crying from the pain, and "Blast from the Past" (the only episode in which Sniffles has eaten an ant without being killed) shows that anteaters and ants used to be friends. When Sniffles eats an ant, the Prehistoric Sniffles sees that anteaters are supposed to eat ants, beginning the two species' rivalry.
[edit] Pop Pop tries his best to be a good father, but he doesn't know much about parenting...(Voiced by Aubrey Ankrum (2000–) ) Pop is a light brown male bear with a red beret. Some people refer to him as the stereotypically clueless, bathrobe-wearing, pipe-smoking, 1950s style sitcom father. He has never appeared in any episode without Cub excluding his BBQ smoochie. His son Cub often dies as a result of both his attention and inattention - although it is clear that he loves him. In the web series he usually didn't know of his son's deaths, but he is more aware of them in the TV series. He is not very bright (like in "Easy For You To Sleigh", , he pulled the fire detector off because the beepings were too loud for Cub and later on killed himself and Cub because of the smoke) and when he tries to save his son, he often kills him and sometimes himself, too. The only time Pop killed Cub intentionally was in the episode "Read 'em and Weep", because Cub was possessed by a demon, forcing Pop to kill him (despite the fact that Lumpy had already exorcised the demon from Cub). In both the Internet shorts and the TV series, Pop rarely dies, but when he does die, it usually involves fire. Pop does not appear in any episodes without his son. He originally was going to appear in Happy Trails Part 2: Jumping the Shark, but many considered it weird for Pop to kill Flaky. Instead, Flippy took his place. However, Pop becomes more prominent in the TV shows. Pop is one of the few characters in the show who has a much more intelligible way of speaking. He almost speaks clear words in some of the episodes he appears in. As in "Water Way to Go" when cub is trapped in sand and drowning Pop called out to him and he could clearly be heard saying "Hold on, son! I'm coming!" as well as "Cub? Where are you?!". He can even read a book with an understanding vocabulary. There is evidence in the episode "Can't Stop Coffin" that Pop may very well be a widower, due to the fact that in their cameo in the episode, he and Cub are seen mourning at a gravestone which probably belongs to his dead wife. Pop is a cheapskate as seen in "Read 'em and Weep", in a yard sale, he's seen buying a necronomicon for Cub which was in the cent symbol box instead of a fairy book on the dollar table.
[edit] Cub (Voiced by Dana Belben (2000–2005) Ellen Connell (2005–)) Cub is a light brown male bear, who is the son of Pop. He has the appearance and personality of a baby but the intelligence and mobility of a young child. He's the youngest and smallest character of the Happy Tree Friends and his eyes, which are unlike those of the other characters, give him a more infantile appearance, but despite these traits, he still dies and gets injured. He has appeared and died much more in the series than his father and his deaths are usually a result of Pop's bad parenting, although a few of his deaths have happened when Pop was actually paying attention to him in episodes such as "Gems the Breaks" or "Ipso Fatso". If his father's not paying attention to him, he will often be seen wandering around operating machines by himself or carelessly drifting into death-introducing hazards, such as the time Cub was sucking on an electric razor as if it were a pacifier, soon ending with Pop plugging it back in, much to Cubs dismay. Cub is usually killed by machinery or outdoor tools. Cub rarely survives in the series, and his deaths are usually very gruesome, painful, and ironic. The only episodes that Cub didn't die in along with Pop are Out of Sight, Out of Mime (only on the DVD), Don't Yank My Chain, See What Develops and Just Desert. And the ones without Pop, he also survived in Rink Hijinks, and I Get a Trick Out of You. Also, the episodes where Cub survived but was injured were A Hole Lotta Love and A Sucker for Love (both parts). Both of these were with Pop. He has starred in his very own Holiday Smoochie with Pop.
[edit] Flaky (Voiced by Nica Lorber (2000–) ) Flaky is a red female porcupine whose quills are full of dandruff, thus the name and she is the third character without visible ears. Flaky is one of the most popular characters in the series and has the identifiable personality of being a very shy and timid character ever since she had a traumatic childhood event. Sometimes when she gets scared while travelling on a bumpy ride (or before it, as in "Wingin' It"), she gets sick and vomits, like on a roller coaster or plane. She is afraid of chicks as seen in "From A to Zoo". Flaky has often been viewed as a coward. However, Flaky's actions in both the Internet shorts and the TV series go against this as she has been brave and on several occasions had saved her own life several times. Additionally, when hanging around with Cuddles, Flaky is often forcefully dragged into situations that lead to one's or both their demises, despite her warning Cuddles about possible dangers that could occur. Her deaths tend to involve either getting skinned or eaten. Flaky is a helpful character, as evidenced by a couple of the TV episodes, and in a minigame on the official website, Fire Escape. All these factors suggest that Flaky is not only overly cautious (as opposed to being a coward), but also one of the more intelligent and kind characters of the series; for example, daring to organize a surprise birthday party for Flippy, a character who is well-known for being mentally unstable. However, she has, on occasion, been seen as somewhat unstable herself - near the end of the episode "Snow Place to Go", she begins to go insane and makes a companion with a garden gnome and singing "Rock-A-Bye Baby" to it after being trapped in the Arctic with no food or civilization. She is also allergic to peanuts. When she consumes a peanut, her face gets covered in pimples, her lips swell up, and she inflates like a balloon, as seen in "Party Animal". Flaky's gender is generally known as female, although some users, fans, and even some of the creators think it is unconfirmed. Even the Happy Tree Friends website is ambiguous to the gender. She was originally made by Rhode Montjio to be a boy, though most of the creators preferred Flaky to be female to account for her voice and feminine demeanor. In episode commentary on the DVDs, they refer to Flaky as female with pronouns such as 'she' and 'her.' Almost all the Happy Tree Friends crew think she's a girl, the rest are not sure.[4]. In the episode Ski Ya, Wouldn't Wanna Be Ya, Disco Bear doesn't pay any attention to her and even pushes her aside accidentally while gazing at Giggles and Petunia. However, towards the end of the episode, when she stumbles into his cabin, he flirts with her. In the episode "See What Develops" Disco Bear also winks at her while they are shaking hands. Most fans think that Flaky is a girl due to her voice and personality. Some fans think Flaky is a boy because of the activities she engages in, though fans who disagree confer this as evidence that she's a tomboy.
[edit] The Mole The Mole is a blind magenta male mole with dark glasses with a resemblance to Walden from Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!. On his face, The Mole actually has a mole. The Mole is known for his facial mole. He wears a purple turtleneck. Like Mime and Cro-Marmot, he doesn't speak. He is not deaf, though he does have hearing problems, as seen in "Party Animal". Disaster follows his blind bumbling. He seems to love stuffed animals. His actions and character are that much like those of Mr. Magoo. In several instances, he mistakes body parts such as severed heads for other things. He doesn't appear to have his driver's license revoked, since he has been seen driving. His driving abilities are clearly not safe for his surroundings, but he is actually seen stopping at a red light and honking at Splendid's laser beam in "Gems the Breaks". According to the commentary for Pitchin' Impossible, the Mole was originally supposed to be a James Bond-like secret agent with all kinds of spy gadgets around him but it was removed when the series was created. It wasn't until the episode, Mole in the City, that his secret agent identity was explored. He also has an arch-nemesis known as The Rat, most likely because they both have careers in industrial espionage. A running gag in the series is The Mole doing things that require vision such as stopping at a red light, lighting a match to see in the dark, and even reading a book. He usually has jobs that require good vision which, in most episodes, leads up to his and other characters deaths (Lumpy and Handy in particular). According to the commentary for Concrete Solution the writers do this just because they need something bad to happen and The Mole (along with Lumpy) is basically the worst person for almost any job. If they need the story to move normally, usually one of the other characters does the job. In the web shorts, The Mole rarely dies because one producer's daughter is blind and they didn't want to offend her or any blind person, and usually causes harm to the other HTF due to his blindness. In the TV series, he dies a lot more often, but he still survives a lot of episodes. His deaths usually involve either his head or loss of body parts.
[edit] Disco Bear (Voiced by Peter Herrman (2000–) ) Disco Bear is a golden male bear with an orange afro and two sideburns who likes to dance to disco music (his name "Disco Bear" comes from "disco ball"). He wears 1970s style clothing, including a yellow jacket, yellow bell-bottom pants and orange and white dancing platform shoes. He usually puts everyone around him into life-threatening trouble while dancing, but mistakes their movements of pain for funky dance moves. He is mostly seen either showing off or trying to impress female characters, such as Giggles and Petunia, and usually killing them in the process. Like many characters, his deaths usually involve his head; the others are random. In Rink Hijinks, he accidentally bumps Flaky into a floor buffer when he's trying to show off his roller skating skills. Despite his failures in wooing the ladies, he seems to be well off financially as he is seen with a private ski cabin in "Ski Ya, Wouldn't Wanna Be Ya", his fancy home (which looks like a bachelor pad decorated with the 1970s era furniture, modern art paintings, a heart-shaped bed, a hotel-like bathroom, and packs of romantic candles) in the TV series, a hot tub in Wishy Washy, a luxury car (resembling a Pontiac Trans Am) in Blind Date, a hairspraying-dryer chair in Easy Comb, Easy Go and his own submarine in Sea What I Found. Disco Bear also has poor eating habits, eating hot dogs, bacon and other fatty foods, and moaning over vegetables, as seen in A Change of Heart and Ipso Fatso. Because of this, he gains weight, losing self-esteem, not being able to run that much, and having heart diseases, like a heart attack. Besides disco dancing, he's talented at rollerskating, downhill skiing, and throwing frisbees long distances. It has been stated in several DVD commentaries and in the HTF forum that when the Internet series started most people in the staff (except for Rhode Montijo) didn't like Disco Bear because they found him annoying. Warren Graff has said that it wasn't till the TV series started that they began to like him. He has recently appeared in a new Halloween Smoochie.
[edit] Russell Template:Happy tree Friends character (Voiced by Jeff Biancalana (2002-2005) and Francis Carr (2006–)) Russel is a Pastel green male sea otter with typical pirate accessories like a Jolly Roger's hat, a striped red/white shirt, a hook, an eyepatch and two wooden peglegs. He enjoys fishing, sailing and eating seafood, one of his animal instincts, especially mussels, which was why he was named Russell. He also likes kite flying and even runs his own fast-food restaurant (Mime to Five). His hook started off on his left hand, but later on, it appeared on the right hand and remains there for the rest of the series (but sometimes changing as a mistake). Russell's initial character design depicted him with a five o'clock shadow, though since his early appearances, it seems as though he shaves regularly. He stopped having a five o'clock shadow since Get Whale Soon(In the commentary for the episode, the producers joke that it's because his five o' clock shadow got ripped off when he was being pulled through coral.) Typically, his vocabulary consists only of "Yar", though in the episode Get Whale Soon, he also says things like 'Aha!' and 'Huh?' In the episode A Sight for Sore Eyes, he was heard apologizing to the Mole after he accidentally bumped into him ("I'm sorry, sorry, matey!"), although his speech was still mumbled a bit. Sometimes, when put in a scary or violent situation, Russell will go insane and start laughing in a crazy manner. His eye turns gray, as seen in Get Whale Soon, and while insane, Russell looks somewhat similar to "flipped-out" Flippy. Because Russell spends most of his time in the water, he is rarely seen with the other characters, though he does appear in a few episodes with Lumpy (Idol Curiosity, In a Jam, Sea What I Found & Snow Place to Go). Nowadays, though, he seems to appear with all the others as well. His deaths usually involve getting impaled. From the episode, Sea What I Found, when Russell woke up and went to his closet to change his peglegs, it is evident that his legs are partially amputated. He is the second character to wear pants, and the second after Handy to have amputated limbs. Also, he's the fourth (& final) character without visible ears as seen in his Internet shorts introduction when he took his hat off for a few seconds. Russell wears a stripy undershirt when he goes to sleep. He lives in a big pirate ship shaped treehouse and sleeps on a purple hammock.
[edit] Lifty & Shifty (Voiced by Mark Giambruno (2000–2005) and Kenn Navarro (2006–)) Lifty & Shifty are two dark green male identical twin raccoons brothers. They frequently steal merchandise from the other Happy Tree Friends, as well as hunt for treasure, ransack houses, or do anything to get rich quick (though they have never attempted to steal from Flaky, Cro-Marmot, or Splendid). They have technically never stolen anything from Nutty, although they did trade him magical jellybeans for a cow and sold candy and video games to him (knowing that he is addicted to it and going to buy more). They mostly steal from Lumpy - in Meat Me for Lunch they stole meat from Lumpy's deli mart, in Milkin' It they stole a cow from Lumpy's farm, in Concrete Solution they stole his wallet, and in Junk in the Trunk they abducted his pet elephant.Lifty and Shifty tend to die some of the most gruesomeist deaths. Although they have the same markings, bushy tails, personality and almost identical voices (Lifty has a slightly higher pitched voice), Shifty wears a fedora and he bosses Lifty around. It is unknown which of them is older. Despite the smirks on their faces and their kleptomania, they almost always end up perishing in the process. Their green color implies money and greed, relating to their 'criminal duo' personalities. They also have a trademark evil snicker (usually a different one for further episodes). Like most siblings, Lifty and Shifty argue about who's to blame when a problem emerges, but when trouble's afoot, they work together. Both twins are greedy and sometimes resort to seeing their twin die rather than give up their loot or be caught (it is unknown if Shifty does this all or if Lifty does too), as seen in Milkin' It when Shifty threw Lifty out the hot air balloon as not to get caught by a power line. And in "Sea What I Found", Shifty had a chance to save Lifty, but instead he just stole his jewels. Consequently, Shifty suffers nastier and more painful deaths than Lifty does because of this. But most of the time if they ever die separately, then Shifty is usually the one to die first and his brother shortly after, however most of the time they die together. Their greed can also lead to their deaths, as in the episode As You Wish. These kleptomaniac raccoons have the lowest survival rate of any HTF. Their deaths also usually involve them either mashed together or sliced apart as in "Meat me For Lunch" where they are made into hot dogs and ham slices, and in "Easy for you to Sleigh" when Lifty's corpse is converted to a gift box. In both the Tv and Internet series Lifty has died before Shifty only twice; in Who's to Flame and Milkin It when an engine crushes Lifty's head when Handy unknowingly drops garbage instead of water from his helicopter, and when Shifty shoves Lifty out of the balloon which they escaped from and is impaled by a tree. However, they do mix with other characters and contribute to recreational activities (such as going on a roller coaster and participating in a Christmas play) without causing any trouble. Rarely they earn cash honestly and have even been heroic, such as in Happy Trails Part 2: Jumping the Shark, when they provided a life raft to help the characters escape from an island (the raft was later punctured by Flaky's quills and when swimming back to the island, Lifty and Shifty were dragged underwater and most likely eaten). Lifty & Shifty have, on occasion, made money by themselves without stealing, such as selling dogs who get crazy when they hear whistling in Doggone It, selling bottles of hair growth formula to Disco Bear in Easy Comb, Easy Go, and selling Nutty candy and a video game console (implied to be an Xbox 360) in the "Happy Tree Friends: False Alarm" episode.
[edit] Mime Mime is a purple male deer with a painted face who wears a black and white striped shirt. Because he is a mime artist, others have a hard time understanding him, as seen in "Who's to Flame?" when he attempts to call 911 after Petunia and Giggles catch on fire, only to have a confused Lumpy hang up on him when he doesn't hear anyone on the other line. Apparently, most of his possessions are imaginary yet can be stolen, as evidenced in "Easy For You To Sleigh". It has been said that he's mute, but in some episodes, like in Happy Trails pt. 1 and Out of Sight, Out of Mime, he has made audible noises, making it evident that he can speak, but he chooses not to. He is talented with circus skills like juggling and creating balloon animals. His attempts to entertain his fellow Happy Tree Friends often have fatal consequences. Mime is also very fond of peanuts, going so far as to stick his hand in a blender to eat them. In "Mime and Mime Again" , "Out of Sight, Out of Mime" and "Class Act", he had a visible tail. However later on, he doesn't have it anymore. He's slowly becoming a very popular character, appearing in more and more episodes in the TV series. It has been argued whether Mime is a girl, however it can be seen that he is a male considering he has antlers, which in moose and deer, only males have. Also in Easy Comb Easy Go, Giggles and Petunia run up to him and flirt, further proving his masculinity Mime is usually seen riding a unicycle, as in "Party Animal", "Concrete Solution", "Who's to Flame?", "As You Wish!", "A Hole Lotta Love", "See What Develops", "Junk in the Trunk", and "Double Whammy". Mime is the only character who doesn't die in both of the TV episodes ("Who's to Flame?" and "Mime to Five") he starred in without co-stars. He is also the only character to have his name in an episode's title. He could be portrayed as a juvenile deer judging by the size of his antlers. He lives in a tent, on which the inside looks like a regular house seen in "Easy for You to Sleigh", and "Mime to Five". He dies quick and painless deaths more than any other character. Like many other characters' deaths, they involve his head. He has recently appeared in a new Olympic Smoochie, notably the FIRST new smoochie created since the original 8 back in 2003-2005
[edit] Cro-Marmot Cro-Marmot is a light-green male marmot frozen in a block of ice. He is somehow able to perform many tasks off screen while entirely encased in ice, such as throwing snowballs, somewhat akin to how Handy can perform construction and other tasks without any visible hands. To keep himself frozen, Cro-Marmot stays mainly in cold areas, and sometimes drives an ice cream truck. He lives in a giant glassed Dome or more likely a big snow globe, or rather a small igloo inside a giant snow globe. His hobbies include serving people ice cream, snowboarding, and surfing. He rarely dies in the series, (he dies in Dino-Sore Days, Class Act, and possibly From Hero to Eternity) the reason being that the ice he's usually encased in protects him from disaster, thereby rendering him almost invulnerable to most unfortunate events. Also, most of his "deaths" are debatable. The only episode in which he is not frozen is Dino-Sore Days, as that episode occurred during the prehistoric times when he was unfrozen. In Dino-Sore Days, he appeared as a black-and-white character similar to the classic Mickey Mouse cartoon; with white gloves, shoes and black limbs, bigger nose, and longer ears. In the opening of the irregular episode, it states that it was copyrighted in the year 1927. Cro-Marmot usually appears in the series as a background character, and has hardly any showcase appearances, but has been marked his first appearance bigger than a cameo since Snow What? That What! and Dino-Sore Days (either could be considered accurate) and in the episode, Wipe Out. In a featurette of the Second Serving DVD, he was interviewed, and it was revealed he's an accomplished writer, painter, and pianist, and he has his own brand of foot powder, known for his loud antics and energetic performances, and has been called the "sexiest Happy Tree Friend" in 1992. However, since the interviewer was unable to get any responses out of Cro-Marmot, she got into a violent rant with the creators. Cro-Marmot is the second character to have a full head of hair besides Disco Bear. Also, besides Lumpy and Sniffles, he is the third character in the series without a set of buckteeth, with just one tooth on the bottom part of his jaw. The first part of his name is depicted from the word, Cro-Magnon. Even though he only made a cameo in the episode, Tongue Twister Trouble, it was actually his official debut in the series. It also makes him the only HTF character to have a debut episode where he wasn't a starring character.
[edit] Flippy Good Flippy realizing his mental problemFlippy is a green male bear with dog tags and a green beret with checkered crest, and camo shirt. There is evidence to suggest that he fought in the Vietnam War, particularly his obsession with making booby traps inspired by the Viet Cong, as well as a flashback of his experience of being held captive by them (as seen in Easy for You to Sleigh). In addition, his attire seems to resemble the U.S. Army Special Forces, which played a role during the Vietnam War. According to writer Warren Graff, Flippy is mostly based on John Rambo (which is apparent to the fact that Flippy kills most of the characters with a knife resembling the bowie knife that Rambo uses as well as traps similar to those seen in the films). Flippy rarely appears in the series, most likely due to his repetitive behavior in most of the episodes in which he appears. He is Happy Tree Friends' most popular character and has inspired most of the Happy Tree Friends Fan characters/Flippy Fangirl characters. He lives in an overturned log resembling a Quonset hut, a structure used by the U.S. Armed Forces. Though Lumpy was picked to be the main character of the show, fans prefer Flippy to be, due to his talent of killing. Flippy has a severe case of post traumatic stress disorder. Whenever he sees or hears something that he associates with violence or that reminds him of war (e.g., ketchup, gunshot-like sounds or crackling campfires), he goes insane, becomes extremely aggressive and kills everyone around him, believing that he is still in war. While insane, several physical features about him change: his eyes turn a different color, usually green or yellow, his voice changes from high and cute to low and evil, and his teeth become sharp. In the early Internet shorts, his teeth became crooked. He first developed this aggressive change after facing a life and death state while hiding in the dead body of one of his friends as shown in one of his War Journals. And supposedly throughout every other war he has been in his disorder, and it had had been consuming/controlling himself more frequently. Although Flippy can be the most cruel and dangerous character in Happy Tree Friends, his good side is considered to be one of the most sociable and kindest of characters. This is proven in several episodes where he is seen doing social activities with some of the other characters such as going to the movies and playing hide and seek. In most of the episodes where he appears, he is shown as a friendly and social before he goes crazy, or should many people say "flipping-out." Also, after he "flips-out", he does not remember the bloody rampage that follows. However, in Double Whammy, (and possibly starting from Party Animal when he resists his evil side for the first time) he finally realizes his problem and goes to Lumpy the psychiatrist for answers. He then removes his 'evil' side on Double Whammy Part 2/ Autopsy Turvy, but is soon killed by a chicken truck. So far, Flippy has killed every character, with the possible exceptions of Splendid and Cro-Marmot. (His bomb depicted on the Overkill DVD Box Set may have killed Splendid, and his van in Autopsy Turvy may have killed Cro-Marmot, but these are still debatable.) His own confirmed deaths (killed twice in Remains To Be Seen) were all caused by machinery. Most of his deaths were caused by some kind of vehicle, whether he was operating it, or another character was. Along with that he is also killed in explosions. Flippy is one of the main characters in the HTF spin-off Ka-Pow!, where he has an all-new appearance.
[edit] Splendid (Voiced by Rhode Montijo (2000–2004) and David Winn (2006–)) Splendid is a pale blue superhero male flying squirrel. He is largely based on Superman; he can fly at extreme speeds, shoot laser beams from his eyes, has super strength, supersonic hearing, can turn back time and can breathe ice. He is often seen doing housework until he hears a character that needs to be rescued. His appearance is somewhat based on Rocky J. Squirrel from Rocky & Bullwinkle. Toothy is a great admirer of him, he even dressed up like him for Halloween. The irony of Splendid being a superhero is that he often unintentionally kills the characters he rescues (Giggles in particular). This is usually either because of his ignorance or his own powers. Most of the time, he is oblivious to the other characters' deaths. He often flies away without checking to see if the other characters are actually safe, with the exception of the episode Helping Helps. However, in Gems the Breaks, he purposely killed 3 characters (The Mole, Lifty & Shifty). In From Hero to Eternity he killed, or caused to die, every character, with the exception of Disco Bear, Mime, Pop, and Flippy. He believes that being a superhero is a pain in the neck. Whether Splendid died in the Internet shorts depends on whether or not the fans assume that Splendid was killed in the schoolhouse explosion in Class Act, but the creators say that every character has surely died, either in the school explosion, or the forest fire that would be caused (Splendid can be seen flying in when everyone is hurt outside.) His only confirmed death was in the TV episode Gems the Breaks where he was overexposed to his one and only superhero weakness: Kryptonut, it looks like a green glowing acorn, except it is made out of rock - a reference to Superman's Kryptonite weakness. Not only will the Kryptonut make him lose his powers, but it will also make him vomit continuously and give him the stomach flu. Splendid is the only Happy Tree Friend who hasn't had a role in any of the show's Halloween related episodes or Smoochies. His one of the main characters in the HTF spin-off Ka-Pow!, where he has a different appearance.
[edit] Other characters Generic Tree Friends — Used en masse when needed, for example, in a large audience. They are also occasionally killed en masse. Generic Tree Friends are not coloured the usual colours; they are all-black, mysterious coloured but their eyes, nose, and mouth are shown. Some of them look like a darker version of Toothy. Pig Child — The final character to appear in "Mole and the City". Giggles' Mom — Appearing only in the episode "Helping Helps". She is voiced by Dana Belben. She may appear in TV episodes, making her appear more often in the TV episodes than the internet episodes. Giggles' mother is yet to make an appearance on the TV episodes. Panda Mom — She and her child appear in "Books of Fury". They also make a cameo appearance at the beginning and end of Buddhist Monkey's Ka-POW! episode. Old Prehistoric Sniffles — This prehistoric anteater appears in the episode "Blast from the Past". He is voiced by Liz Stuart. The Narrator — A narrator that gives instructions to Lumpy in the training video Ski Patrol. The narrator was voiced by Mark Giambruno. The Elephant — The Elephant is shown as Lumpy's pet in "Junk in the Trunk," which is stolen by Lifty and Shifty. Fall Out Boy — The band members appeared in the music video as bears for The Carpal Tunnel of Love.
[edit] Buddhist Monkey (Voiced by Jeff Biancalana) A special character that starred in his own special episodes. First one was "Enter the Garden", and he was featured a second time in "Books of Fury". He has appeared in three other episodes. In Rink Hijinks, there was a picture of him on a crane machine, in Keeping it Reel, in the movies, the movie was Enter the Garden, and in Blind Date, at the drive in, it was Books of Fury. He is the only star-characters that never died. He seems to be a fictional character within the Happy Tree Friends World. His name is likely inspired of "Buddhist monk" since he is a monkey. Buddhist Monkey was originally supposed to be a HTF main character, but the creators thought he didn't fit. Instead of getting rid of him they decided to give him his own show. "Enter the Garden" and "Books of Fury" are two of the ten irregular episodes. He has recently appeared in the new Ka-Pow! episode, "Three Courses of Death".
[edit] Ka-Pow! exclusive characters Main article: Ka-Pow!
[edit] W.A.R Journal Sneaky is a green chameleon that can stretch his tongue and blend in with any background. He was killed in Operation: Tiger Bomb when Flippy accidentally pins him to a wall with his knife and was partly blown up shortly after. Mouse Ka-Boom is a tan mouse with a French accent. He specializes with explosives, and has bandages on his ears (possibly blown off by mistake). He says "Le" before any word. He was killed in Operation Tiger Bomb when he is sliced in the middle by Flippy so awkwardly and blown up by his own bombs and sticks of dynamite. The Tiger Army are the enemies that Flippy and his crew face. Tiger General is one of the evil leaders of The Tiger Army. He is missing an eye and has a claw for his left hand. He was killed in Operation: Tiger Bomb when he is crushed by a falling log.
[edit] Buddhist Monkey Dark Shadow Lord: The supposed main enemy of Buddhist Monkey and Ruler of the Ninja/Generic Tree Ninja clan. His name may have been mentioned as Char Sew, but it may be the Pig Ninja's, he appears to be an ancient Chinese dragon. Generic Tree Ninjas: The Followers of the Unnamed Shadow Lord. Char Sew: One of the Dark Shadow Lord's more elite warriors, a pig ninja. He has a Giant Crab that he can control. He and the Crab were boiled to death in Three Courses of Death. Orangutan Master: Buddhist Monkey's teacher when Buddhist Monkey was younger. It was hinted that he died some time before Ka-Pow!. Panda Mom and Panda Cub: A mother Panda and a baby Panda who live near Buddhist Monkey. It was hinted that she became poor due to poverty in Ka-Pow!
[edit] Splendid's SSSSSuper Squad Splendont: The Polar Opposite of Splendid. He was freed when Splendid plugged a volcano with a large rock, the pressure built up, and it was launched into outer space. The rock broke the mirror prison, setting him free. He is possibly going to be in more episodes. Mirror, Mirror Super-Fox: One of the four members of the Super Squad that Splendid summoned for help. It is probably a female, due to her pink suit and feminine mask. She seems to possess the powers to create phantom hands. Super-Spider: A member of the Super Squad that Splendid summoned for help. She appears to be a spider because of her multiple eyes and use of webbing in the end of the episode. Possibly female, as she is wearing several bows on her head. Super-Robot: One of the members of the Super Squad that Splendid summoned for help. Some sort of creature in what appears to be a robotic suit. Super Jellyfish: Another member of the Super Squad that Splendid summoned for help. Appears to be a squid or jellyfish-like creature in a jar of water.
[edit] Enemies While most suffering in Happy Tree Friends is accidental, there are some antagonistic forces within the fictional world. Cursed Idol - A Mayan statue which brings death and bad luck. This cursed Idol does none other than just sit there. When it appears, everyone who is near the statue dies brutally. This idol is based on the golden fertility idol in Raiders of the Lost Ark. It features in the episodes "Treasure Those Idol Moments", "Hello Dolly", and "Idol Curiosity". It appears as a prop in many other episodes such as "Crazy Antics", "Happy Trails", "Milkin' it", "Class Act", "Ipso Fatso", "Who's to Flame?", "Get Whale Soon", "Remains to be Seen" and "Every Litter Bit Hurts" and has a cameo appearance in "Gems the Breaks", "The Wrong Side of the Tracks" and "A Hole Lotta Love". The Rat - He has appeared only and died by being split in half on a giant mouse trap in the episode "Mole in the City". Generic Tree Ninjas - A special group of Generic Tree Friends from Japan, who terrorize the sacred places where Buddhist Monkey lives. These dark ninja are exclusive to the Buddhist Monkey episodes (excluding the episode "Keepin' it Reel" where the ninjas appear on a movie screen), both of which have recently been shown online. In "Enter The Garden", the ninjas wear green outfits with a leaf on their chest, while in "Books of Fury", they wear red outfits with an open book on their chest. Demon - A carnivorous demon with tentacles that Cub had been possessed by in "Read Em and Weep". It was summoned when Pop read a satanic book, which resembles The Necronomicon. Alien Lumpy Clones - An army of light green Lumpy clones that first appeared in "Peas in a Pod". When ever a body part is cut off, it would grow it back, plus it would multiply. Whistle - A cute little grey puppy(based off Ken's dog of the same name) that Pop buys for Cub at the local pet shop in "Doggone it", and one the most deadly enemies in the Happy tree friends series. Although cute, lovable, and playful, Whistle has savage and murderous tendencies toward anybody in sight using his cuteness to deceive his victims. This puppy somewhat bares traits with Flippy. As Flippy's flip-outs are triggered by anything reminding him of war or the heat of battle, The Puppy's savage side is triggered by any high-pitched sound. (i.e. a whistle blowing) Another evil dog, though probably not Whistle, appeared in "Happy Tree Friends Break-Chore Loser". Like Whistle, it attacked Cub while Pop was not paying attention to him, but unlike Whistle, it didn't seem to have any specific reason for attacking him.
[edit] Animals The Ants, an ant family — They are voiced by Kenn Navarro, Warren Graff and Ken Pontac. A family that has a mother ant, a dad ant, a teenage daughter, the middle son, and a baby ant. Whenever they appear in an episode, it often involves Sniffles trying to eat them, only to be tortured and killed in the most sadistic manners. Mittens/Honey — The reason this character has two names is that the crew, thus far, haven't really decided between the two as to which the kitty's name is[citation needed]. She appears in the episodes "A Sight For Sore Eyes", "Out of Sight, Out of Mime", "Blind Date", "Tongue Twister Trouble", "Junk in the Trunk", "Who's To Flame" and "Doggone It." The Cow — A cow that is stolen in "Milkin' It". The cow also appears in "The Way You make Me Wheel", "Dunce Upon A Time", and "Aw, Shucks!". Whistle — A dog that appears in "Doggone It" and one that looks similar to it in "A Sight For Sore Eyes" and "Junk in the Trunk". He is normally a friendly dog but when he hears a whistle he becomes hyper-aggressive and gains a very Flippy-esque face. Whistle is based on writer Ken Pontac's dog with the same name whose barks were recorded for this episode[citation needed]. He is known to have killed Giggles, Disco Bear, Lumpy and presumably Cub. The Whale — The Whale has been shown in 3 episodes: "A Change Of Heart", in which Handy is lying on top of the whale with both of them dead, "Water You Wading For", when Cuddles tries to escape from a pond full of crocodiles but the whale comes out and and crushes him, and "Get Whale Soon" as the whale that eats Lumpy and Russell, that after Russell escapes it he dies and then gets re-eaten.
