Rahman (composer) & Sukhwinder Singh, Tanvi Shah, Mahalaxmi Iyer & Vijay Prakash (singers) from the album Slumdog Millionaire Released November 24, 2008 Format CD single, Digital download Recorded 2008 Genre Soundtrack Length 5:19 Label N.E.E.T. Writer(s) A.R. Rahman, Gulzar Producer A. R. Rahman "Jai Ho" (Hindi: जय हो) is an Academy Award-winning Hindi song composed by A. R. Rahman, written by Gulzar, and performed by Sukhwinder Singh and Rahman, for the film Yuvvraaj[1] and played during the end credits of the film Slumdog Millionaire (2008), where it accompanies a choreographed dance sequence. The song also features vocals by Mahalakshmi Iyer, Tanvi Shah and Vijay Prakash.[2] The Pussycat Dolls released a modified version of the song with English lyrics. "Jai ho" means "Victory(Jai) Hooray(Ho)". R. Rahman revealed in an interview that it was Ghai who had asked him to use the words Jai Ho in a song.[4] After its inclusion in Slumdog Millionaire, it was later nominated for best song at the 2008 Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards, the 2008 Satellite Awards and at the 2008 Houston Film Critics Society Awards. In 2009, it won the Academy Award for Best Original Song, beating out WALL-E's "Down to Earth" by Peter Gabriel, and "O... Saya", also of Slumdog Millionaire and by A. R. Rahman.[5] The lyrics are mostly in Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi interspersed with some Spanish lyrics.[6] According to Rahman, “Jai Ho,” or “Victory Hooray,” was meant to create “a vision of the whole world celebrating this victory”.[7] Rahman, who performed "Jai Ho" live on The Oprah Winfrey Show on February 23, 2009 YouTube-Pussycat Dolls - Jai Ho Offical Music Video
with the rest of the original performers, was asked by Winfrey what the song title means. Rahman stated "Jai Ho" means "May you be victorious". In March 2009, Super Cassettes Industries (T-Series), the music company which holds the song's copyright, received nearly $200,000 from the governing Indian National Congress party for its use in its national campaign in the upcoming 2009 Indian General Elections.[8][9] This version will feature altered lyrics sung by Sukhwinder Singh, who performed on the original song.
